Why I Like To Help

Empathy is one of my defining traits.

In trying to understand my own feelings, I have come to understand the feelings of others. It’s more than just understanding, though. I can understand others to the extent that I experience experience their same feelings.

This is why I like to help people.

I used to think it was just that I knew what it was like to need help. To be so overwhelmed by life – drowning under the waves of expectations. But it’s more than that. When I see someone in distress, I don’t sympathize and pity them, I actually start experiencing actual distress.

That’s why when I see a problem, I almost always try to help; though sometimes I try to do too much. I try to tell them how exactly to fix a problem. However, sometimes people need to figure things out on their own, even if it’s the same thing I would have told them to do.

It’s not that I’m trying to be a busy body; I am actually experiencing a similar feeling. I want to get rid of it for me just as much for you. In relieving your distress, I relieve mine. But I get more than just relief; I get happiness, and the satisfaction that I was able to help a friend.
