Ego is just a crutch for those lacking in some aspect of their life. It serves as stitching to hold together an Id and super-ego that has been split apart. It is a piece of imperfection caused by the separation of being into two unique entities (I.e. The id and super-ego).
The ego is a construct. While the super-ego and id exist naturally. Though, as I mentioned, in their true natural state they are one in the same.
That is why the ego is ever changing and malleable, because it reacts and alters itself as the relative relationship between the super-ego and the id changes.
