When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I don’t know if this is what I wanted to be when I was five, but the first thing I can remember wanting to be was an inventor. I have always loved problem solving. So, figuring out how to fix a problem, then making something to fix said problem – that was the dream to little me.
Since “inventor” isn’t really a degree you can pursue through school, I chose to go the engineering route. I figured that was the closest thing to “inventor.” Though I never ended up finishing that degree, so I guess it wasn’t close enough to what I was looking for.
I ended up becoming a philosopher & a poet. That may seem way far off from my initial desire, but I don’t think so. The philosophy half satiates my desire to problem-solve, and crafting my words into poetry that captures my philosophy is the “making” half of inventing. At least that’s what I tell my younger self.
