I Don’t Blame Technology…

What technology would you be better off without, why?

Technology serves a purpose. It doesn’t just happen. Someone sees a problem, then tries to correct it. Sure, there are some technologies that could be seen as “better off” if we didn’t have it as a potential solution. Just because the nuclear bomb ended WWII doesn’t mean we’re better off because it was invented.

Where am I going with this? I don’t really know. I’m just spouting nonsense from the top of my head. But if I tried to summarize my feelings as succinct as possible, it would probably be this:

I’m tired of robots being blamed for how people choose to use them.

I’ve gone back and forth on how I want to follow up this statement, but as always, I’m pretty scatterbrained right now.

Whatever…

I guess I’ll put a conclusion without actually mentioning most of my talking points racing through my head.

Getting rid of a technology that we misuse & abuse wouldn’t fix the actual problem that is the people using the technology. So why/how would we be better off getting rid of something when the ones causing the problem would just pervert some other mechanism? We can get rid of every form of weapon & destruction – it just doesn’t matter – there will always be killers & destroyers.

Scale isn’t where we fail. Scale is where we find the failure that always existed, just small enough from our self-centered perspective that it doesn’t affect us personally. A nuclear winter might destroy the whole world, but a stray bullet can destroy the whole world to an innocent bystander.

Tools serve as promise. Fools misuse tools. Technology is a tool. Humanity is one, too.
