There’s this strange phenomenon
That has happened around me
For a very long time
Probably since I was a child
But I know I started to notice
5 years ago, at the very least
Where street lamps seemed to
Randomly turn on or off
As I walk by or look at it
Like, for example, the street lamp
That’s outside my apartment
Often does it to the point
While I was staring at it
Through my window
I joked to myself
“Oh, so you decided to stay on tonight”
& literally as I finished that thought
The light went out
Almost like it could hear me
Though thinking that would be crazy
But, whatever
When that happened
It inspired me to write this poem
To capture this strange phenomenon
If only partially
…
Though, something else interesting happened
When I realized it would be a good idea
To get a picture of the street lamp
Because even if I couldn’t prove
That the light went out
The moment I looked at it
At least I could show it was strange
That it was the only one that was out
…
Unfortunately
By the time I went outside
It had turned itself back on
Which was slightly unfortunate
For the sake of my story
So I joked to myself again
“It’d be really convenient if you turned off again”
Though this time, it didn’t
So I relented, and took a picture of it anyways
But when I went back inside
By the time I had gotten back to the window
I realized there wasn’t any light coming through
So I went back outside to find
The street light had gone out again
Funny
It’s like it listened to me
Again
