Something sorta strange happened
But before I get to that
I have to explain the background
& how a bunch of little pieces
Add up to make this situation
Feel odd for some reason
But, to start
I get a lot of scam calls
But weirdly enough
Most of them are silent on the other end
And just hang up somewhere between 11-45s
So I’ve gotten fed up with all of them
That I’ve started calling back the numbers
A lot of the time they’re dead lines
Which is weird, like
How am I returning a call then?
Whatever
But every so often
I’ll get the agency that was trying to scam me
But for some reason didn’t come through
Well, a lot of times it’s a robot
So I just hang up
But when I did get a real person
I’ll admit that I was a bit of a monster
Yelling at them incoherently
Hoping they would remove my number
But really I just wanted to blow off steam
To some faceless nobodies
Who don’t get paid enough to deal with my bullshit
So, I started to feel bad about it
Even if they were asking for it
By constantly barraging my phone
With insincere motives meant to trick me
Still
I decided not to yell anymore
Though, to still be annoying
I return the favor
I call them
And if they pick up
I just remain silent
Until they awkwardly hang up
…
So, now that I have given
Way more background than I need
What strange thing happened
Was I called a scam number
& when they picked up
They did their little spiel
Something about car collisions
But she also introduced herself
As Hannah… something, I don’t remember
But Hannah is the important part
So, there’s a few things strange about “Hannah”
The 1st, this isn’t the first time I’ve had a Hannah
I think it was someone this or last week
It stood out to me in particular because
“Hannah” is my “girl name”
So it’s one of the few things in this world
That captures both my attention & memory
Though, back to this most recent time
Another Hannah – I didn’t know if it was the same one
I couldn’t recall which number called me before
Since my call history is flooded with spam
…
So I decided to call again
Half-expecting it to redirect me to someone else
But to my surprise – I got the same Hannah, though
Since I had the previous incident with a Hannah
I was wondering is “Hannah” was the new name
For whatever AI they have working their calls
So I began to suspect it was a robot
Who just happened to sound convincingly human
As the beginning of the call did start the same
Though realizing it’s just because it’s a real person
Just someone who has to read the same script all day
Because after they hung up the second call
I tried a third time, and this time
They answered me with my first name
“Noah?”
I was super shocked
I stayed silent
As I never intended to talk in the first place
Though my fight or flight response did kick in
But after I remained quiet
I’m pretty sure they put me on hold
Previously, the script + my silence
Lasted about 50ish seconds for the first 2 calls
Yet this time – it lasted 4:16 until they hung up
After that, I was a little spooked
So I decided not to call again
And rather write this poem
…
This whole ordeal has been strange
But writing has helped calm me
While capturing this bizarre moment
The fact that the person’s name was “Hannah”
Still gets to me – I don’t really believe in coincidences
And one last thing I’ll mention
Is that during this whole thing
My entire body was tingling
I really do believe I have a connection
To the name “Hannah” – and I think
I experienced an odd encounter
With a random soul sister
