The people who try to convince you to give up tend to be the ones who regret giving up, but refuse to admit that they made a mistake. So, they try to validate themselves by convincing others that the smart thing to do is give up, when in reality, Misery just loves company.
Someone who has given up on a dream, yet not on themselves, thus choosing to do the necessary self-reflection, knows that if given another chance, they’d never give up. Then, when they see some kid come along with the same dream, they don’t resent them for trying to achieve where they failed. They recognize that this kid is the second chance they’d hoped for. They may never achieve their dream themself, but they can still experience it as mentors. They might not have all the answers since they never made it to the end, but they do know the wrong ones, so at the very least, this next version of them will make it further than they did.
And that’s really the Human Experience. If we’d given up on anything that we’d never see the end with our own eyes, we’d still be living in caves. But we kept moving forward, dreaming of the stars when we hadn’t even discovered our own world. But no matter how many people dreamed of walking on the moon when it wasn’t even fathomable how, we kept that collective dream alive, proving that even the sky isn’t the limit.
