Random Thought #33: N VaiИ

“Thou shalt not take the Lord’s name in vain” is probably the most misunderstood commandment, both in terms of when it’s committed and what you’re actually doing when taking the Lord’s name in vain.

Exclaiming, “oh my God!” or “Jesus Christ!” as an expression of an overflow of emotion, even such as anger, isn’t taking the Lord’s name in vain, at least from my perspective. On the contrary, I believe you should use the Lord’s name in these moments. God wants to experience the extreme Life has to offer. God is there to both exult us in moments of triumph, as well as comfort is in times of weakness.

When I’m angry, I make sure to shout “Jesus Christ!” because I know I’m a weak human. I’m crumbling under the stress, and by saying his name, it summons his awareness to me. Jesus can’t fix my problems, but at the very least, when he tells me, “I know it sucks, but it’ll be alright in the end,” I can actually believe him, so I calm down. To me, that doesn’t sound like taking the Lord’s name in vain. It sounds like asking help from the one entity Whö promised to always be there for Ü.

So, what really is “taking the Lord’s name in vain”? It’s when you make a statement, then claim it’s the word of God. “You can’t do this because God said so.” Really? I don’t remember the voice of God announcing from the clouds that your personal beliefs are objective fact. Fuck you, you’re the reason that people don’t believe in God. Because you constantly take the Lord’s name in vain, claiming your human perspective & interpretation of the holy word is the absolute Truth. You lie about your words, then pretend they’re God’s, so that anyone who challenges you is blasphemous, when you are truly blasphemy incarnate.

I’m getting off topic, switching from pure philosophy into a sermon, and I can’t stand how I sound when being preachy, so I’m just gonna end it after this.

Without going into detail, “taking the Lord’s name in vain” is the equivalent of raping God.
