Random Thought #92: Neurotypical Autism

I’m almost certain I’ve said something similar before, but it’s a point worth repeating: “neurotypical” is just the brand of autism that society decided to build itself around, calling it “Normal.”

“Normal” is such a misleading word since we live in a society where being “Normal” means acting as expected. A normal person feels natural in normal society, but if you think about it, there’s nothing natural about much of what we consider “Normal.” Put a “Normal” person in a strange environment, then suddenly the “Normal” person doesn’t seem so natural.

I think one of the best examples of this is “manners.” Like, look at table manners specifically. There’s nothing natural about following made-up rules about what’s acceptable behavior for eating food that only goes into my body. Why do I need to know how to set a table in a specific way? Why do I need to use one fork for salad and a different fork for my entré? Why can’t I put my elbows on the table and chew with my mouth open? Because some autistic monarch 1000s of years ago who couldn’t handle letting people live differently than them had the power to force everyone to act in the way that appeased their autistic quirks, and anyone who didn’t conform was considered a weird outcast.
