Random Thought #94: Bootstraps

I believe the phrase, “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” encompasses American ignorance. For if you didn’t know, that phrase was originally a sarcastic one describing how impossible it is to escape poverty. It’s basically saying, “why don’t you just work harder to not be poor?” is the same thing as saying, “why don’t you just pull up on your bootstraps and fly away?” Yet, even though the phrase was meant to call out the absurdity of our economic system, an entire generation took it to heart and made it their economic creed.

It’s so much easier to tell someone to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” than it is to help them; then that means the blame is all on them. That is, until you find yourself in an unfortunate situation where you can’t even afford a pair of boots. And now, there’s no one there to help you, because you spent your entire life trying to convince everyone else that poverty is a punishment for poor work ethic, rather than realizing it’s an intentional trap meant to imprison good people – only realizing once you’ve found yourself among the neglected & abused.
