Random Thought #97: Pascal’s Suicide Pact

I give a lot of shit to Pascal and his wager; it being that whether or not God exists, it’s better to follow “God” since, if God does exists, there’s an infinite amount to gain by following God, but if God doesn’t exist, then there’s only a finite loss.

I find it an inferior wager to Aurelius’, which states you should strive to be who you view as a good person regardless of God as a consideration, because if you live a good life, a good God would reward you regardless if you worshipped them. However, if God punishes you even though you lived a good life just because you didn’t follow a specific religion, then that God is unjust, and doesn’t deserve worship regardless.

But I wanna take some time to give Pascal some credit. I’m running out of steam, so I’ll just mention when I think Pascal’s Wager is most relevant: when considering suicide. The best that can come from killing yourself is it finally ending and nothing happening afterwards; it all goes black, and you’re not even aware your suffering has ended. But if you’re wrong, and something does happen after death, you could have just traded a lifetime of suffering for an eternity of suffering.

Irreverent Divine Favor (Aurelius’ Wager)
