Random Thought #121: Registered 6-Offender

I feel like I might have mentioned this before, because it’s one of those random thoughts that are seemingly inconsequential, yet they keep popping up again, again & again.

In this case, the thought is about the classic joke: “why is 6 afraid of 7. Because 7 8 9.” With the play-on words being that 7 ate 9. But that’s just the surface of the joke that many don’t really look beneath. Sure, it makes sense that any number would be afraid of 7 if it ate another number, so everyone just assumes “6” is tagged onto the joke because it happens to precede “7.” It could easily be “why is 5 afraid of 7?…” But it’s more than that, because there is a connection unique to the number “6” that makes the joke even funnier: it’s the fact that “6” is an upside down “9,” so if you think about it, “6” is the only number certain that it can be eaten, since “7” has already eaten the same shape.

After writing all of that, I’m reminded of another saying I hold onto that feels quite relevant:

“Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog: you understand the frog better, but now the frog is Dead.”

I just wanted to tag one of my alternate answers to, “why is 6 afraid of 7?”

Because 7 is a registered 6-offender
