Random Thought #173: MAHA

As someone receiving SNAP benefits, I believe it’s fair for me to comment on the restrictions being placed on “junk food” as part of an ongoing attempt to “make America healthy again.”

To start, a part of me is for the idea. As someone who mainly buys junk-food from the gas station I work at, I don’t know if it’s really right for me to be spending money on treats with little to no nutritional value. Sure, it gives me calories to keep going, but eventually I’ll break down if I keep feeding those vices.

Even before these bans started popping up, I always held that energy drinks shouldn’t be covered by SNAP. I consider caffeine a drug. If you can’t buy alcohol, you shouldn’t be able to buy caffeine. Though, once again, I spend a lot of my money on energy drinks. In a way, I do feel like I’m misusing the funds afforded to me in my time of struggle, but at the same time, in those times of struggle, sometimes you just need a little sweet treat to get you through the day.

And that’s where the other perspective comes in. A part of me does support the restrictions being placed on junk food, because it will make America healthier. But my problem is, that’s not really why we’re doing this. Those in power don’t care about the health of those below them. Most of them are probably invested in the Healthcare industry (side note: the fact that “Healthcare” can be considered an “industry” is sickening), so the more sick people means more money for the elites who never have to worry about a hospital bill. We’re worth far more dead or dying than when we’re thriving.

If they really wanted America to be healthy, they’d invest in school lunches & put restrictions on the people making the unhealthy food. There are so many more effective ways to “make America healthy again” than by taking away the last few joys remaining for the less fortunate. Taking away junk food from those on SNAP isn’t about making them healthy. It’s about reminding the Poor that they are second-class citizens who don’t deserve the luxuries of “real Americans.”
