I think people are a lot more self-aware when they’re not paying attention to how they’re perceived…
A really funny saying to me for a lot of different reasons is:
“You throw like a girl!”
Like I said, there’s a lot of different reasons why I find it funny, so let’s see which order they come out…
I guess I’ll start with a fun little clip from a childhood show of mine, “Dexter’s Laboratory.”
My sisters were sports stars, so I never really saw girls as unathletic. Also, I’m currently re-watching the scene, and the dad said, “in sports, it’s not what you say what counts, it’s what you do,” in response to Dexter asking why he’s bringing Dee-Dee over to show him how up throw…
And I guess that’s starting to get to the deeper point to why it’s particularly funny to me. I’m athletic, though my main sport is soccer, so I’m not very coordinated with my hands. So even though I’m relatively strong and kinetically intelligent with my body, I’m still awkward when it comes to throwing things.
There’s this one particular where I spent a week at a lake house with a friend’s family, and one day they asked me to throw them some beers from a dock to somewhere nearby them, since the cans would float and they could pick them up. I was a little worried about hitting them, but that doesn’t account for me only making it half-way while my two friends threw them easily the whole distance [though, to be fair, one was a swimmer and the other played baseball]
So, you could say I throw like a girl…
& that brings me back to my original point:
“I think people are a lot more self-aware when they’re not paying attention to how they’re perceived…”
What I mean is, telling a boy that he “throws like a girl,” may be considered inconsiderate or even offensive; however you take it, it’s not “politically correct.”
But the thing is, when we police our words to fit how society believes we should speak, we lose the Truth found in instinct & authenticity. Because if you’re at all familiar with me, Ü know Ey3 identity as “Trans,” so looking back, having someone tell me that I, “throw like a girl” is really funny to me…
