DoorDash is our “favorite” customer, I like to joke, since probably more than half our orders are through them. And since Sheetz is both a fast-food place & a convenience store, that means we have to fill both kinds of orders.
The food orders are the same as whatever, just someone ordering on their phone rather than at the monitor at Sheetz. However, the store portion of filling orders is quite frustrating.
I don’t know who’s in charge of inventory, but it feels like we’re always out of stuff. You’d think it would be pretty automatic; we order 60 stock something, then When we sell 55, the system should automatically order more. Maybe that’s how it does work, and maybe the system just can’t keep track of it since people like to steal from us…
Whatever, I wanted to comment on something that happened tonight, though has happened multiple times. Whenever we’re out of an item, we have an “Oh Sheetz! We’re Out!” Sticker when we can only partially fill an order (and we don’t do substitutions like some other places). Though, when we don’t have anything, I just leave an empty bag with the order name, then let them know we can’t fill it at all when the driver shows up to pick up the order.
What’s annoying is, especially since it’s nighttime, we get a lot of people who don’t speak English too well. I’m not one of those people who go, “this is ‘Merica; speak ‘Merican” [Funny observation: I’ve never noticed “‘Merican” & “Mexican” are a letter apart…]; however, when there’s 30 bells ringing in my kitchen & I have to tell someone 3+ times that we can’t fill tne order, it’s just super frustrating. I don’t like to be rude, but since they don’t understand me, I basically have to yell [it’s not a yell, it’s just that any aggression N my voice triggers Ahimsa…] at them “No.”
What adds to the frustration is that the DoorDashers rarely mark that the order can’t be filled. I don’t think they understand the system well enough to, or maybe they just leaved confused, having no idea what I said, just That I wasn’t helping them. Either way, that causes multiple DoorDashers to come & try to pick up the same unfillable order. And since more often than not, they don’t speak English, I can’t ask them to make sure to cancel the order. We’ll, I can, and do, it’s just that they don’t…
It’s funny, I can’t remember the name of the particular order tonight, though it felt seared in my head throughout the night. I forget if I had to talk to 3 or 4 DoorDashers, just That it wasn’t ’til the last 1 Whö finally spoke the same language as me, so we were able to finally work things out so it didn’t happen the rest of the night.

I wanted to mention 1 now DoorDash order. I realize now this is the order I forget the name, though I did have to deal with multiple DoorDashers with this 1, too.
What I think happened was someone picked up the order, and either stole it or just decided to end his shift before delivering it. Idk. Either way, we had 2 additional DoorDashers show up & try to pick it up. The 1st one was strange… the 2nd ones were a couple just getting by…
They reminded me of us in another life…
