Discussion Excerpt: What Is Conservatism?

I never claimed to like slow change. I like what I consider balanced change. “Slow,” “fast,” and “balanced” are all relative terms, so there’s fault at the foundation of your argument that “slow change” is bad. Your “fast change” could be someone’s “slow change.”

Everyone has their own ideal rate of change. Assuming your preference is best in a society is ignorant. That’s why we’re a democracy. Because ideally as a democratic society, we come together to compromise so that we can meet in the middle that is best for the country as a whole.

Conservatism isn’t the absence of change. It’s a spectrum that includes everyone who’s ideal rate of change happens to be slower than the exact center; whether it’s slower by a day or a decade, both are conservative.

That’s conservatism – anyone who happens to fall right of center. It’s not a set-in-stone dogma that is an absolute. It’s a portion of the political spectrum that changes as the center changes. Conservatism is inherent to political systems.

  1. Liberalism could be described as those who like and desire fast change, as opposed to conservatives who want slow change. Which leaves those in between as moderates who want change at a moderate rate, not too fast and not to slow. There are people who have their own other terms and ways to define liberals and conservatives. It is hard ti find people who agree on the meaning if most political terms and labels, People can be divided into those who are too timid and people who are too much into adventurous.
