I’m a weeb in a closet with no doors, so I wanna talk about an interesting observation I’ve observed with anime being played on American streaming platforms, specifically JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure on Netflix.
JJBA is either my favorite or second favorite anime, depending on the day, so I’m particularly invested in that series. I don’t really watch much anime these days; I dont really watch much of anything other than youtube.com these days. Still, I’m eagerly awaiting JJBA Pt. 7. And so, I’m gonna talk about a small difference between delivery with pats 6 & 7 via Netflix, as it’s a surprisingly good example of cultures adapting to each other.
So, let’s see if i can actually put this in some form of orderly thought.
Netflix is very much known for “binge watching” culture. You find a random show, you watch it in 1 or 2 big watch sessions, then you move on before really having time to process whether you really enjoyed the last 12 hours of your life…
Anime really isn’t like that. I watched a lot of anime; most of it shitty. Like, I mean there are genuine works of Art that…we’re not gonna talk about them right now; let them rest.
All I’m saying, as a staunch defender of anime, 90% of it is trash, and that might be generous. Though they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure…
And so, that’s why I watched so much shitty anime, since it was seasonal; one episode at a time is bearable, even when you’re watching 15 series and only looking forward to 2 or 3. ..
So, you may be wondering, “why waste your time watching something ‘bad'” – because not only am I a weeb, I used to be the kind of weeb that lurked on 4chan’s /a/nime board. Only posting maybe once or twice; i have social anxiety even when I’m anonymous. Though, I had most of my fun reading the discussions of the other losers like me watching the same trash since they had nothing better to do…
And so, that brings me back to Netflix & JJBA
Part 6, Stone Ocean, was released in batches on Netflix after they aquired the streaming rights. Let’s just say, the autists were furious; literally ruined the experience for them. Luckily for me, I don’t really go on /a/, nor really discuss anime with anyone anymore, so it really didn’t bother me that much. That being said, I empathize with the people who are trying to enjoy Anime for the right reason…
Now, we’re at Part 7, and Netflix announces that they’ll be doing weekly releases of Steal Ball Run – and if you looked at the response from the anime community’s response on the internet, you’d think they’d just heard that Jesus had descended from the clouds…
